Historical background

COUNTY OF LUXEMBOURG - ERMESINDE

(1196-02/17/1247)

Ermesinde, daughter of Count Henri IV of Luxembourg (1136-1196) was promised by her father, in 1192, to Count Thibaut de Bar. Thibaut bought Luxembourg from Otton of Burgundy and succeeded in conquering the domain of Poilvache and Namurois. He died on February 12, 1214 and Ermesinde remarried to Waleran, son of the Duke of Limbourg. The latter died in June 1226. From 1236, Ermesinde associated his son Henry I with the administration of the county. She died on February 17, 1247.
