Commentary


Mazard indique que ces exemplaires sont frappés au milieu du XIXe siècle. Il est aussi possible que ces “monnaies” soient des frappes de l’époque de la Restauration. Les listels sont hauts, le flan bien régulier et la tranche lisse.

LOUIS XVII

(21/01/1793-8/06/1795)

The Duke of Normandy, second son of the marriage of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, was born at Versailles 27 March 1785. He became dauphin after the death of his elder brother died June 4, 1789. After August 10, 1792, he was imprisoned in the Temple with his parents. On the death of his father guillotined January 21, 1793, the royalists proclaimed titular king of France under the name of Louis XVII. On 3 July 1793, he was separated from his mother, guillotined on 16 October, and his aunt Elizabeth, also guillotined May 10, 1794. He was in the custody of the cobbler Simon, contrary to legend, would have made him suffer any ill-treatment. January 5, 1794, Louis XVII was in the custody of four commissioners of the Commune. The exact date of his death is uncertain, but they probably died June 8, 1795 and was buried secretly in Sainte-Marguerite cemetery in Paris. His sister, Marie-Thérèse Charlotte, December 19, 1778 - October 19, 1851 escaped death after years of martyrdom was exchanged with the Austrians against Nicolas Marie Quinette Baron de Rochemont, Interior Minister, a member of the Five Hundred, investigator treason of Dumouriez, captured on this occasion.
