Commentary
Alain Brandon published two tokens of this type for Auxerre and Alais. He considered them excessively rare, which is explained by their title mentioning the King. Our example shows that this token existed for Caen and that it was \\\"recycled\\\" into a uniform button. Alain Libaud completes this information: it is a uniform button of the national guards of Calvados district of Caen. The model does not mention \\\"THE NATION\\\", but only \\\"THE LAW AND THE KING\\\". This model is of the 2nd type, 2nd decree of September 5, 1790. Here again the attachment of the reverse has disappeared and to reuse it the user pierced it with two holes to fix it. Therefore it is not a token. Reference source: THE FRENCH UNIFORM BUTTON. LOUIS FALLOU. 1914. (see bourgeois and irregular troops pages 227 figure 15, this model) It is said that a number of national guards crossed out the word \\\"king\\\" on their buttons when they learned of the flight of Louis XVI during his arrest at Varennes
