Commentary
According to Feuardent, this token was made at the instigation of Jules Mazarin to commemorate the birth of a son to Louis XIII on September 5, 1638, after twenty-three years of marriage to Anne of Austria. He compares the king to Caesar bringing back the Golden Age. Suetonius' \\\"Twelve Caesars\\\" are back in fashion, and many series of tokens reproduce the Roman emperors from Caesar to Domitian. On the other hand, Jules Mazarin, an Italian, great art lover and admirer of the Roman Empire, may have wanted to mark the providential event that gave an heir to the kingdom of France and added Dieudonné (God gave him to us) among his first names. Exceptional engraving quality
