Historical background

LORRAINE - DUCHY OF LORRAINE - FERRI III

(1251-1303)

Ferri III (1239-1303) succeeded his father Mathieu II in 1251, under the tutelage of his mother Catherine de Limbourg, who died in 1255. The same year, he married Marguerite de Champagne, daughter of Thibaut de Champagne and promoted emancipation of the communes of his duchy by the law of Beaumont. He was continually in conflict with the bishops of Metz Philippe de Florange (1260-1263), then Guillaume de Traisnel (1264-1269), Laurent de Lichtenberg (1269-1280), Jean de Flandre (1280-1282), finally Bouchard d 'Avesne (1282-1296) and the counts of Bar Thibaut II (1239-1291) and Henri III (1291-1302). Lorraine was invaded several times. From 1294, Ferri supported Philip IV the Fair against Edward I Plantagenet (1272-1307). Initially a supporter of Rodolphe de Habsbourg, he ended up supporting Albert, Archduke of Austria. Ferri III died in 1303, leaving his son Thibaut II to succeed him.
