Historical background

LORRAINE - DUCHY OF LORRAINE - CHARLES IV AND NICOLE

(1624-1625)

Nicole (1608-1657), daughter of Duke Henri, had married her cousin Charles de Vaudemont (1604-1675) in 1621. On the death of her father, Nicole inherited the duchy jointly with her husband, but soon discord broke out in the young couple and François de Vaudemont (1572-1632), second son of Charles III and father of Charles IV, had his niece dispossessed for his benefit on November 26, 1625 and abdicated five days later in favor of Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine ( 1626-1634, 1638/9 and 1661-1675). Nicole's reign had lasted only fifteen months.
