Historical background

LORRAINE - Duchy of Lorraine - RENÉ II

René II is the son of Ferri Vaudémont and Yolande of Aragon. His two grandfathers René of Anjou and Antoine Vaudémont. He succeeded Nicolas d'Anjou (1470-1473) and then had to face the invasion of Lorraine by Charles the Bold in 1475. Finally, the Duke of Burgundy was killed under the walls of Nancy. After an alliance with Louis XI, he became angry with him about the succession of Bar. René reconciled with Maximilian of Austria, son of Charles the Bold. He married his second wife Philippa of Guelders, daughter of Adolphe d'Egmont which, in 1489, Antoine was born. He tried in vain to claim the throne of Naples as Charles VIII prevented. René II died in 1508.
