Historical background

LORRAINE - BISHOPRIC OF METZ - ROBERT DE LENONCOURT (83th bishop)

(1551-1555)

Robert de Lenoncourt, cardinal-bishop of Metz was also count of Chalon, peer of France, archbishop of Arles and Embrun. The bugne or tertelle is mentioned in an ordinance of 1511 as being worth 10 denarii. In reality, it runs, as its second name indicates, for 4 denarii or a third gross. This coin would have been struck from the end of the 14th century and remains, in the middle of the 15th century, of a still medieval style with the uncial letters. Robert de Lénoncourt had bought against the advice of the Messins and for 4,000 Francs the right to mint the workshop. Nevertheless, he never knocked in Metz.
