Historical background

LORRAINE - BISHOPRIC OF METZ - BERTRAM (59th bishop)

(01/1180-6/04/1212)

Bertram had to assert himself against the dukes of Lorraine Simon II (1176-1205) and Ferri II (1205-1213). Bertram, 59th bishop of Metz, introduced a new type with a blessing hand resting on a cross, a type which would later be taken up by Conrad de Scharfeneck (1212-1225) and Jean I d'Apremont (1225-1239).
