Historical background

LIMOUSIN - VISCOUNTCY OF LIMOGES - ANONYMOUS

(12th-13th century)

Foucher is traditionally given as the first viscount of Limoges in 887. The coinage of the viscounts of Limoges imitated the barbarians of the Saint-Martial de Limoges abbey from the second half of the 12th century then changed radically when Marie, daughter of Guy VI , married Arthur of Brittany and entered the House of Brittany in 1276. The Viscount replaced the monogram with the checkered pattern of his arms: Dreux, Bretagne, Limoges.
