Commentary

Historical background

LIEGE - BISHOPRIC OF LIEGE - ERNEST OF BAVARIA

(1581-1612)

The chapter of Liège will choose Ernest of Bavaria in 1581 after the death of his predecessor, Gérard de Groesbeeck. From this episcopate, several foreign princes succeeded one another and most often abandoned the affairs of Liège. Under Ernest of Bavaria, four workshops of the bishopric minted coins: Bouillon, Hasselt, Liège and Maeseyck.
