Historical background

LEO V and CONSTANTINE ARMENIAN

(25/12/813-25/12/820)

Leo V had no time to pursue the Iconoclastic controversy. Following a fierce repression, he was murdered in the St. Sophia Cathedral on Christmas Day with her son Constantine. Leo V had won great victories against the Bulgarians, especially against Krum. Leo V is a contemporary of Charlemagne as his predecessor Michael I was recognized as emperor of the West in 812.
