Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Léon Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’a) ; diadème perlé.

Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Leo”, (Notre seigneur Léon).

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE/ B|E// -.

Reverse description : Vérina drapée et voilée debout de face, tenant un globe crucigère de la main droite et un long sceptre transversal de la main gauche.

Leo I (411-474) was an officer of Dacian origin. He succeeded Marcian in 457 and attempted to reform the army. He counterbalanced the influence of the Germans by a massive influx of Isaurians, including Zeno, his future son-in-law who married Ariadne, the eldest daughter of the Emperor and Verina, in 467. Leon fell seriously ill in 473. He then chose his grandson, Leo II, to succeed him. Leo I died the following year and Zeno wasted no time in seizing power by joining forces with his son, Leo II, before ousting him..
