Languedoc - Viscount of Beziers - RAYMOND TRENCAVEL

(1150-1167)

Viscounts of Béziers were also viscounts of Carcassonne since the marriage of Raymond I. (1002-1012) with Garsinde, Viscountess of Béziers and Agde. Roger II succeeded Trencavels Raymond (1150-1167) who was murdered in the church of Sainte-Madeleine de Béziers in front of the bishop. Raymond Trencavel II, grand-son of Roger II, the last Viscount of Carcassonne and Beziers from 1209 to 1247 in full Cathar heresy. Dispossessed of Carcassonne by Simon de Montfort in 1209, he gave two viscounties the king of France, Louis IX in 1247.
