Historical background

LANGUEDOC - VISCOUNTCY OF ALBI - RAYMOND VII AND BISHOP DURAND OR BERNARD DE CASTENET

(1248-1280)

The first coinage of Albi is perhaps directly inspired by the denarii of Raymond Pons, Count of Toulouse in the 10th century. The coinage is impoverished after 1212 at the beginning of the crusade against the Albigenses. The papal legate had settled in Albi to fight against heresy. The city was attached to the kingdom in 1249.
