Historical background

LANGUEDOC - COUNTY OF MELGUEIL - BISHOPS OF MAGUELONNE - ANONYMOUS

(11th - 12th centuries)

The town of Maguelonne, founded by the Visigoths, was ruined by the Franks in 737. The bishops took refuge on the site of Subtantion which has now disappeared. Maguelonne was relieved by Bishop Arnaud (1030-1060). In 1172 the county of Melgueil passed into the hands of the house of Toulouse. The manufacturing privilege belonged to the Counts of Melgueil who, ruined, ceded their rights to Pope Innocent III who made them subject to Bishop Guillaume III of Autignac (1204-1216) on April 14, 1215. From then on the county of Melgueil was in the hands of the bishops of Maguelonne. These bishops had to face the rise of the house of Aragon which had just come into possession of Montpellier. From 1293, Philippe IV installed a workshop in Sommières which was transferred to Montpellier in 1356. The episcopal see will be abolished in 1536 and he will settle in Montpellier.
