Historical background

KINGDOM OF MONTENEGRO - NICHOLAS I

(1860-1910-1918)

Entrenched in their mountains, the Montenegrins resisted the Turks for centuries. Allies of the Russians in the 19th century, the principality became a monarchy in 1910. Nicolas I, who reigned as an enlightened despot, also approached Italy and married Princess Hélène to the future Victor-Emmanuel III. Montenegro sided with Serbia in 1914 and was invaded by Austria in 1916. Nicolas I took refuge in France and was deposed in 1918 when Montenegro was incorporated into Yugoslavia.
