Reverse description : E lunaire et inversé. Tyché d’Antioche tourelée et drapé, la tête de face assise à gauche ; l’Oronte nageant à droite ; le tout dans un temple distyle.

Commentary


Ce type est le premier frappé à Antioche pour le pentanummium et le seul à représenter la Tyché d’Antioche avant le catastrophique tremblement de terre qui détruisit presque totalement la ville.
This type is the first minted in Antioch for pentanummium and the only one to represent the Tyche of Antioch before the catastrophic earthquake which almost completely destroyed the city

Justinian succeeded his uncle Justin in 527 after a co-regency from April 4 to August 1, 527. He reigned with Empress Theodora. The construction of Hagia Sophia was completed under his reign, which marks the height of the Byzantine conquests. Carthage as well as Africa and part of Numidia were reconquered from the Vandals thanks to General Bélisaire. After a century of Vandal domination, Romanism once again reigned over the Mediterranean. Belisarius then attacked the Ostrogoths and took Rome on December 9, 536. Theodora died in 545. Justinian reigned another twenty years. Childless, his nephew Justin II succeeded him..
