Obverse description : Buste casqué, diadémé et cuirassé de Justinien Ier de face avec pendilia, tenant de la main droite un globe crucigère et de la gauche un bouclier (N1'a) ; diadème perlé ; dans le champ à droite, une croix.
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Iustinianus Perpetuus Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Justinien perpétuel auguste).

Commentary
Poids léger. Pendilia bouletées. Cuirasse ornée de trois clous. Le bouclier est orné d’un cavalier galopant à droite. Les folles de la fin du règne semblent plus rares. Ce type pour la cinquième officine n’est recensé que dans la collection du Cabinet des médailles de la BnF.

Justinian succeeded his uncle Justin in 527 after a co-regency from April 4 to August 1, 527. He reigned with Empress Theodora. The construction of Hagia Sophia was completed under his reign, which marks the height of the Byzantine conquests. Carthage as well as Africa and part of Numidia were reconquered from the Vandals thanks to General Bélisaire. After a century of Vandal domination, Romanism once again reigned over the Mediterranean.
