Exemplaire sur un flan extrêmement large, bien centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis visibles. Beau portrait avec une usure superficielle sur la partie la plus en relief. Joli revers. Magnifique patine gris vert, granuleuse

Commentary


Le bouclier est orné d’un cavalier galopant à droite. C’est la première année de frappe après la réforme an 12 (538/539). Le follis est encore taillé au 1/18 L. (poids 18,04 g).

Justinian succeeded his uncle Justin in 527 after a co-regency from April 4 to August 1, 527. He reigned with Empress Theodora. The construction of Hagia Sophia was completed under his reign, which marks the height of the Byzantine conquests. Carthage as well as Africa and part of Numidia were reconquered from the Vandals thanks to General Bélisaire. After a century of Vandal domination, Romanism once again reigned over the Mediterranean.
