Historical background

JOHN PAUL II (Karol Wojtyla)

(Since 16/10/1978)

John Paul II succeeded John Paul I, who reigned one month between August 26 and September 28, 1978. The vacant seat (sede vacante) was made by the Camerlengo Cardinal Jean Villot between September 28 and October 16. October 16, Karol Wojtyla, a Polish pope since the first foreigner in 1523, took the name John Paul II.
