Commentary


Ces petits lingots monétiformes furent fabriqués en grande quantité. Cette monnaie aurait été frappée entre 1853 et 1865.
Lère Kaie est une des ères du règne de l’empereur Komei.
These small monetary ingots were produced in large quantities. This coin is believed to have been minted between 1853 and 1865. The Kaie era is one of the eras of Emperor Komei's reign.

JAPAN

(Nineteenth century)

Since 1616, the Edo or Tokugawa (shogunate) period, Japan was closed to foreigners, except the Chinese and the Dutch. The country then experienced a great period of stability and development. The cities extend and a middle class emerges with the merchants and large craftsmen. From the visit of Commodore Perry in 1854, Japan evolved very quickly.
