Historical background

ITALY - NAPLES - KINGDOM OF NAPLES - ALFONSO I THE MAGNANIMOUS (V OF ARAGON)

(1442-1458)

After the death of Wladyslaw in 1414, Jeanne II designates successively as heirs Alphonse V and Louis III of Anjou, which will be at the origin of dynastic wars. Alphonse V, king of Aragon and Sicily since 1416, emerged victorious from these wars, recovered the kingdom of Naples in June 1442 and made a triumphal entry into this city on February 26, 1443. He was at the origin of the meeting of Naples and Sicily, thus forming the first Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Naples was established as the capital to the detriment of Géla, which was also stripped of its mint. The unification of Naples and Sicily did not survive Alfonso V who died in 1458.
