Historical background

ITALY - LOMBARDY - MARIA-THERESA

Marie-Thérèse is the daughter of the Emperor Charles VI who modified the order of devolution of descent so that his daughter could inherit the crown. Marrying François III of Lorraine (1708-1765) in 1736, she became queen of Bohemia and Hungary on the death of her father in 1740, and her husband, François I, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1745. After the death of her husband, her son Joseph II became emperor but the empress kept her powers until her death in 1780, in particular in the Austrian Netherlands and in the Italian possessions, including Lombardy.
