Historical background

ITALY - FIRST ROMAN REPUBLIC - ANCONA

(15/2/1798 - 29/9/1799)

In 1797, following the invasion of the Papal States by French troops, many cities proclaimed the republic. In January 1798, the Directory had Rome and what remained of the Papal States occupied by an army commanded by Berthier. On February 15, the Roman Republic is proclaimed, which is organized on the French model. At the same time, on November 17, 1797, the Ancônitaine Republic was proclaimed in Ancona, a port on the Adriatic. It was reunited with the Roman Republic on March 7, 1798. The taxes and the maintenance of the French troops quickly upset the Romans who welcomed the Neapolitans as liberators in November 1798. After a return of the French, the first Roman Republic disappeared with the final departure of the French in November 1799.
