ITALY - VICTOR EMMANUEL III

(1900-1946)

Son of Umberto I and Margherita of Savoy, Victor Emmanuel III became King of Italy 29 July 1900 after the assassination of his father. It covers the colonial conquests with Libya in 1911 and the occupation of the Dodecanese Islands in 1912. During the First World War he eventually joined the allies allowing Italy to recover territories such as Trentino, South Tyrol, Trieste and Istria. Economic and political crisis of the wars door fascists in power. After the March on Rome, October 26, 1922, fascist Mussolini, the king asked him, October 28, 1922, to form a new government. Quickly moved a fascist dictatorship. After the invasion of Ethiopia, the Empire of Italian East Africa is proclaimed May 9, 1936 which gives Victor Emmanuel III the title of emperor. In April 1939, Albania was occupied. After the signing of the axis Rome - Berlin and steel pact, Italy entered the war 10 June 1940 alongside Germany. The British offensive in Africa lost to the Italians their possessions on this continent and the arrival of the Allies dropped the fascist dictatorship and leads to a situation of civil war. May 9, 1946, the king abdicated in favor of his son Umberto II but the referendum of 2 June 1946 put an end to the reign of Savoie proclaiming the republic.
