Commentary

The gros or grosso (Matapan) was created at the instigation of Henry Dandolo (1192-1205, 41st Doge) who was the political instigator of the capture of Constantinople by the Crusaders on July 17, 1203. The sequin or zecchino d'oro was first struck by John Dandolo in 1284 at the Zecca. The Zecca is the tower located in St. Mark's Square opposite the Doge's Palace, which can still be seen today and where the coins were minted. This type of coin is directly inspired, or even copied, from Byzantine coinage. For this reason, we consider the obverse to be Christ in Majesty.
