Historical background

ITALY - NAPLES - HENRI DE GUISE

(1648)

Philip IV of Spain (1621-1665) reigned over Naples and Sicily. On July 7, 1647, Naples went into rebellion against Spain, led by Masaniello. Mazarin sends a relief army to the insurgents in November. Henri de Guise, Duke of Lorraine (+1664) becomes governor. Unfortunately, he will not be able to stay in Naples and the French are driven out. Spanish domination over the peninsula is confirmed in the Treaty of Westphalia. The war between France and Spain will not end until the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659).
