Commentary

Au revers figure le nom du fondeur J. B. Keller. Les frères Keller, Jean-Jacques (1635-1700) et Jean-Balthazar (1638-1702), venaient de Suisse et étaient des fondeurs de médailles et des orfèvres réputés au XVIIe siècle. D’après l’article de Luc Smolderen, “Jean-Balthazar reproduisit le grand médaillon de François IV de Gonzague (réalisé en 1612) qu’il signa au revers : J. B. KELLER 1654”. L’auteur de l’article indique également que “Tous les médaillons du duc de Mantoue revêtus de la marque de J. B. Keller [vus par Luc Smolderen] sont d’une exécution impeccable avec un diamètre à peine inférieur : 162 mm au lieu de 164 mm”.
The reverse bears the name of the founder, JB Keller. The Keller brothers, Jean-Jacques (1635-1700) and Jean-Balthazar (1638-1702), came from Switzerland and were renowned medal founders and goldsmiths in the 17th century. According to Luc Smolderen's article, “Jean-Balthazar reproduced the large medallion of Francesco IV Gonzaga (made in 1612), which he signed on the reverse: JB KELLER 1654.” The author also notes that “All the medallions of the Duke of Mantua bearing the mark of JB Keller [seen by Luc Smolderen] are impeccably executed with a diameter only slightly smaller: 162 mm instead of 164 mm.”
