Historical background

ITALY - Grand Duchy of Tuscany - Leopold II

Leopold II of Tuscany (1797-1870) was the son of Ferdinand III of Tuscany (1769-1824) and Louise of the Two Sicilies (1773-1802). He is the nephew of the Emperor Francis I of Habsburg. His sister, Theresa married Charles Albert of Sardinia. This is an ultra-conservative. He succeeded his father in 1824. He is forced to abdicate in 1859 in favor of his son Ferdinand IV (1835-1908) which is itself overturned the following year. Victor Emmanuel II became king of unified Italy in 1861.
