Historical background

VATICAN - PIE IX (Jean-Marie Mastai Ferretti)

Pius IX (1792-1878), elected after a vacancy of only fifteen days, with the longest pontificate nineteenth century. After a happy beginning, showing him, or at least a liberal innovative between 1846-1848, the Roman revolution rejects conservatism. After the February Revolution in France, agitation wins all over Europe and even Rome. Given the refusal of Pius IX declared war on Austria, the Republic was proclaimed on February 9 at the instigation of Mazzini and Garibaldi. On June 1, an expeditionary force was sent to Rome to restore order. The French took the city on July 3 and restore Pius IX. It can not prevent Victor Emmanuel II to achieve Italian unity and finds himself isolated from 1861. Rome resists another nine years before falling into the hands of the king of Italy and became the capital in 1870. Pius IX saw the last nine years of his life in considering himself as a prisoner of the Italian power.
