Historical background

IONIE - Teos

(IV - III century BC)

Teos was a very old city that its inhabitants abandoned in 544 BC, when the Persians invaded Ionia, to found Abdera in Thrace. Less than 50 years later, settlers of Abdera refondèrent the Asia Minor city which is why the two cities had griffins on their coinage. Teos was famous for its temple of Ionic order built by Hermogenes and dedicated to Dionysus. Teos joined the Delian league attico-478 BC tributary of Athens, his coinage was abolished in 449 BC Teos revolted in 412 BC against the Athenian yoke, recovered his independence and mint.
