Historical background

BRITISH INDIA - JAIPUR - MADHO SINGH II

(1880-1922)

Jaipur - from jai, victory and pure, city - is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan. The situation of the city, in a basin protected by the Ârâvalli, allows it to defend itself quite easily, the road to Delhi being held by the fortress of Amber about ten kilometers away. Jaipur is 430 m above sea level and 260 km from Delhi. Madho Singh II succeeded Sawai Ram Singh II in 1880 after being adopted by the latter. At 18, he joined the cavalry. The English reward him for his loyalty by making him honorary colonel of the 13th Rajputs. Under his rule, the state of Jaipur made many advancements. Many thoroughfares are constructed including the Sangama-Sawai Madhopur link which connects Jaipur to various commercial areas. Hospitals, universities, residential areas are also built. Despite his five marriages and his few adventures, he died without an heir. He adopted his nephew from Isarda, Kanwar Mormukat Singh, the younger of the two sons of Thakur Sowai Singh from Isarda. Kanwar Mormukat Singh to rule as Singh II of Sawai.
