Commentary

Achille de Harlay was a French magistrate, born in Paris on March 7, 1536 and died on October 23, 1616. Son of Christophe de Harlay, Lord of Beaumont (now the commune of Beaumont-du-Gâtinais), President of the Parliament of Paris, and Catherine Du Val. In 1558, he became a councilor in the Parliament of Paris. On May 30, 1568, he married Catherine de Thou, daughter of the first President of the Parliament of Paris Christophe de Thou, with whom he had a son, Christophe de Harlay. In 1572, he took over his father's office as President of the same Parliament, which he had resigned on August 30, 1572. Upon the death of his father-in-law Christophe de Thou, in 1582, Henry III appointed him First President of the Parliament of Paris. Chamfort attributes to him this caustic remark made in Parliament: \\\"If these gentlemen who are talking did not make more noise than these gentlemen who are sleeping, that would greatly accommodate these gentlemen who are listening[1].\\\" The Rue de Harlay, which borders the Palais de Justice in Paris to the west, was named in his honor.
