Historical background

ICENI - BOUDICA'S UPRISING

(61)

Since the conquest of Brittany by Claudius in 43, the Icenians were customers of the Romans. In 60, the Icenian king, Prasutagus dies and leaves his wife Boudicca and her daughters under the protection of Nero. The Roman procurator Catus Decianus, seizes the property of the Icenians, lets his daughters be raped in front of Boudicca who is flagellated. The queen raises the Iceniens who are joined by the Trinovantes. Boudicca seizes Camulodunum, London and Verulanium (St Albans). Seventy thousand Roman citizens are massacred. The legate of the IXth legion is defeated and loses his standards. Suetonius Paulinus confronts Boudicca. The fight takes place at the Battle of the Midlands where eighty thousand Bretons are killed. Boudicca commits suicide so as not to fall alive into the hands of the Romans. The ensuing repression is terrible. Brittany is pacified in 63 and peace is restored.
