Historical background

HISPANIA - IBERICO - Ebusus (Balearic Islands, Ibiza)

(III - II century BC)

The Ibiza island was occupied by the Carthaginians from 654 BC according to Diodorus of Sicily. These named the Aebusim or Ibusim island Ebusus Latin. At the end of the fourth century BC, Ibiza turns into a real metropolis and, thanks to its geographical position, the island became a center of redistribution of goods. Commercial development was such that third centuries BC, the island strikes its own currency to the effigy of the god Bes. In Roman times, the island takes its name from Augusta Insula.
