After the end of the first Punic war in 241 BC, the Carthaginians having lost Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily, fell back on Spain. They settled in Gadir in 237 BC Hamilcar, the father of Hannibal was at the origin of this redeployment. Hasdrubal founded Cartagena in 229 BC By the end of the Second Punic War, Spain was practically Carthaginian. Hannibal taking Saguntum, an ally of Rome, in 219 BC, prepares for war against Rome.
