GALLIA - ARVERNI (Area of Clermont-Ferrand)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Arvernes occupied the current territory of the former province of Auvergne. They were considered "the most warlike among the Gallic peoples of the Celtic". The first direct conflict broke out in the 2nd century, when Roman merchants settled in Transalpine in what was to become Provincia (the Province, which became Provence). It was not until 52 BC that Vercingetorix became the leader of the coalition of Gallic peoples against the Roman occupier. He won a great victory near Gergovie. Having inadvertently pursued Caesar's army, he found himself besieged in Alesia. Resisting fiercely, he counted on the relief army to deliver him, but defeated, he had to surrender to Caesar who kept him alive to make him participate in his triumph in 46 BC.
