Caesar (1/03/293-1/05/305)

Galley was of humble origin. Chosen as Caesar March 1 or May 1 293, it is subject to Diocletian to help govern the East. Galley suffered a crushing defeat in 296 against the Sassanids, but the following year he defeated Narses. According to Lactantius, it is the cause of the persecution of Christians in 302-303. During the illness of Diocletian, he pushes it to abdicate. Diocletian and Maximian leave office on May 1 305 Galerius and Constantius become august. The last six years of his life, he will helplessly the disintegration of the political system created by Diocletian Tetrarchy. He died May 5 after stopping 311, five days before the persecution against Christians.
