Historical background

FRENCH STATE - MOROCCO UNDER FRENCH PROTECTORATE

During the Second World War, Sultan Mohamed Ben Youssef (Mohamed V), Sultan of the Cherifian Kingdom since 1927, undertook to protect all Moroccan Jews against the Vichy regime. He also gave his support to "Free France" and supported the organization and recruitment of French forces in Africa. In 1942, the Allies landed in Casablanca. In 1943, the Istiqlal (independence) party was founded by Moroccan nationalists. Morocco pays a heavy price in the European war: 25,000 men died to liberate France.
