On March 19, 1946, Reunion Island became fully-fledged French by obtaining the status of Overseas Department. From the 1960s, the island equipped itself, the youth was educated, the economy diversified and developed. The level of local infrastructure is now comparable to most metropolitan departments. Since the mid-1990s, tourism has brought in more revenue than sugar cane, vanilla, geranium and vetiver combined.
