Commentary

Le buste n'est pas sans rappeler les types dits "à la cravate" ou du "parlement". Le graveur pourrait être François Warin, le fils de Jean et son successeur. Le revers fait allusion à la prise de Besançon par les troupes françaises en 1674. La cité avait déjà été conquise en 1668 et rendue aux Espagnols après la Paix d'Aix-la-Chapelle. Le traité de Nimègue entérina le rattachement de la Franche-Comté et de Besançon au royaume. En 1694, un atelier monétaire royal sera ouvert dans la cité bisontine.
The bust is reminiscent of the so-called \\\"tie\\\" or \\\"parliament\\\" figures. The engraver could be François Warin, Jean's son and successor. The reverse alludes to the capture of Besançon by French troops in 1674. The city had already been conquered in 1668 and returned to the Spanish after the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. The Treaty of Nijmegen confirmed the annexation of Franche-Comté and Besançon to the kingdom. In 1694, a royal mint was opened in the city of Besançon.
