Historical background

FRANCHE-COMTÉ - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF BESANÇON - ANONYMOUS

(11th century)

Charles II the Bald granted the right to mint coins to Bishop Arduic. The workshop was established near the Black Gate (Porta Nigra). In the 11th century, three archbishops named Hugues succeeded one another: Hugues I (1031-1067), Hugues II (1067-1085), Hugues III (1085-1100). Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1197-1250) confirmed this monetary right on April 26, 1220.
