Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - LOUIS I OF CRÉCY - LOUIS II

(1346-1384)

Louis de Male, son of Louis, the Count of Flanders killed at the Battle of Crécy (1346), will try to maintain a policy of strict neutrality between the King of France and that of England. In 1382, he became count of Burgundy. Without a male heir, he married his daughter Marguerite to Philippe le Hardi, son of Jean le Bon, captured with his father at the battle of Poitiers, in 1356 "Father keep to the right, father keep to the left". On the death of Louis de Male, Philippe le Hardi succeeded him, origin of the great Burgundian estate.
