Historical background

EUDOCIA

(+460)

Augusta - wife of Theodosius II

Eudocia, daughter of the Athenian philosopher Leonce, married Theodosius II in 421. She was actually called Athenais and changed her name to Aelia Eudocia at the time of her marriage. She wielded considerable influence over the court of Constantinople and her husband, supplanting the Emperor's sister, Pulcheria. But in 441, she withdrew from public life to take refuge in Jerusalem in a devout life, devoting her time to the construction of churches and the establishment of monasteries. She died in 460, ten years after Theodosius II.
