Commentary

Following the problems with the striking of the Flying Eagle cent, a new type was designed by the chief engraver, James Barton Longacre, the Indian Head cent. In fact, it was Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. This type was struck from 1859 to 1909. In 1859, the type did not have a shield on the reverse. From 1860, the reverse was modified by replacing the laurel wreath with an oak wreath and adding a shield.
