Ces “civil war tokens” sont apparus au début de l’année 1862 alors que le guerre de sécession américaine fait rage. Ils étaient destinés tant à pallier à l’absence de monnaie métallique qu’à des fins patriotiques. On estime qu’au total environ 25.000.000 de tokens furent frappés, incluant entre 7.000 et 8.000 variétés..
