Historical background

Philip III (1578-1621) was the third son of Philip II, from his fourth marriage, one with Ana of Austria. On the death of his father in 1598, he became king of Spain and the Americas, Portugal, the Spanish Netherlands and Milan. He continues to fight his father against France, but with the Edict of Nantes, the wars of religion and personality of Henri IV, the policy fails. He then began an economic war to suffocate France by imposing 30% tariffs on goods coming or going in France in 1603. Henri IV replica imposing the same tax on goods to and from Spain. After the death of Henry IV, Philip married in 1615 his daughter Anne of Austria (1601-1666), the young Louis XIII while the latter's sister, Elizabeth, married the future Philip IV. Philippe III died in 1621.
