SPAIN - KINGDOM OF SPAIN - ISABELLE II

(1833-1868)

Marie-Louise, called Isabel II (1830-1904) is the daughter of Ferdinand VII (1784-1830) and Marie-Christine of Bourbon-Parma (1806-1878). She succeeded his father in 1833 under the Pragmatic Sanction which had ruled the throne his uncle Don Carlos. His mother and regent Espartero between 1841 and 1843. At the beginning of his reign, the Carlist wars begin. Major to 14 years in 1843 declared, in 1846 she married her cousin Francis, Duke of Cadiz (1822-1902). His personal reign began in 1854 develops while the influence of many favorites alternating between O'Donnell and Narvaez in power until 1868. After growing discontent, Isabel is driven from the throne in 1868 and the First Republic was proclaimed. The queen took refuge in France. Refusing at first to abdicate his succession causes the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. She finally abdicated in favor of her son Alfonso XII (1857-1885) who became king in 1874. She died in 1904 in Paris.
