Ce denier est frappé sur un flan court et régulier, assez bien centré des deux côtés. Le métal est homogène et recouvert d'une patine grise

Obverse description : Croix pointée cantonnée de quatre globules ; légende dégénérée et aberrante autour.

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Carré perlé, avec un annelet pointé au centre, des motifs dérivés de TIII dans les coins ; une croisette à droite et des globules dans le champ.

Commentary

Ce type de sceat est parmi les plus rares. Le carré creux est traditionnellement au revers, mais avec cet exemplaire nous aurions deux revers ; la croix étant elle aussi traditionnellement au revers. Le carré perlé est plutôt considéré comme le droit dans les ouvrages de classement.

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
